About Me
I'm an Electronic and Electrical Engineer who has attended Plymouth and Birmingham Universities, since then I have worked in industrial monitoring and now work for the British Antarctic Survey as an Electronic Engineer.
Education
Plymouth University: Electronic and Electrical Engineering BEng
Birmingham University: Electronic Engineering MSc
Employment
British Antarctic Survey October 2017- Present: I am current part of BAS' Antarctic Marine Engineering team working on a range of Low to Medium frequency RF projects and Ships systems.
British Antarctic Survey August 2014-March 2016: I operated, maintained and improved a range of experiments in one of the harshest environments on earth. The main part of my role was maintaining two radar systems, SUPERDarn and MF Radar. SUPERDarn is a frequency agile, 8 to 18 MHz, radar which I maintained and assisted with the installation of a major upgrade. MF is a fixed 2.7 MHz system investigating upper atmospheric ionisation. While at BAS I also maintained a network of field sites, installed and developed a high accuracy GPS tracking system and maintained optical instruments. While with BAS I was also part of the advanced medical team. This involved scenario, first aid, patient recovery, diagnosis and treatment training as well as some practical usage of these skills.
Asset Handling June 2013 - August 2014: While at Asset Handling I developed sensor systems for both asset condition monitoring and remote footfall counting. Both these projects where mine from conception to manufacture. I also made a TCP/IP server and Cross Platform UDP server for the reception of data from some embedded systems. I also planned installations of such systems for industrial sites.
Asset Handling July - August 2011: I worked on building a share point server and organised data from a large number of sources. I also assisted with the development of new sensor systems.
Skills
PCB Design: I have experience of circuit design using a wide range of integrated circuits, as well as micro-controllers and microprocessors in several different CAD packages.
Programming: I have experience writing; “C” for Windows, Linux and ARM, “Assembly” for 8051 and PIC, as well as experience with Bash, PHP, JavaScript, Python and HTML.
Radio Frequency Design: I have designed a range of filters and amplifiers at university, including filtering and amplification subsystems in both microstrip and convestional systems. I managed and maintained a range of Radar equipment in my role at BAS.
CAD: Learned to use 2D and 3D CAD packages including Solid Works.
Team Leadership: While at UPSU Radio I managed a team of people and instigated systems to improve communication between radio station members.
Team Working: While running the radio station and completing my degree, I worked well as part of teams containing people with varied skills. These skills where then pushed further while in Antarctic where team work is essential
Communication: In addition to training members of the radio station effectively, I am also a scout leader and regularly communicate skills, ideas and instructions to large groups. While at BAS working in a small community these skills are key for both safety and training the person who will carry out the role after you.
